The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
