The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
