New Year Partygoers Urged to Wrap Up Warm with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Plans Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be needed," said the weather service.
Displays Under Open but Chilly Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be chilly, so extra layers vital, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday
Heading into Friday, advisories are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.
- Transport is anticipated to be disrupted.
- Travelers have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.
Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Further
Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Medical Warnings Activated
At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency stated this meant the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
