Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – How a Plastic Axe Connected Generations Among Music Generations

It has been 20 years after the legendary game hit the market across the Atlantic, offering everyday gamers the opportunity to become rock legends. Not in reality, but try convincing someone who has mastered the epic four-minute instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, Guitar Hero provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues scrolling down the screen synchronized to a song. Every sequence mimicked particular chords, producing the feel of an authentic performance.

The studio had already tried its hand in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, which was acquired by Activision during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they established the foundations for an unlikely billion-dollar series which made a remarkable impact for many musicians included, showcasing decades-old groups to a new generation of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the early budgetary hurdles in securing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced every song since the cost was so high,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions alone, it proved nearly impossible. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. However, when Guitar Hero took off, album purchases and radio play were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He adds: “Among the amazing things was how many parents got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their kids to the songs they adored. It evolved into a multigenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish group the Answer had Never Too Late on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist the artist remembers how the series brought classic rock to the forefront: “The game provided a bigger, younger audience. Generally such music was seen as outdated material, however when it was included in the game young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ label. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record remained not available stateside, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium for exposure for the band during their a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “The roadies had on Never Too Late on the tour bus, and some of them recognized us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on their music collections and related lore, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly to have made the band more money compared to their studio albums. It moved well over half a million units in its first week, while demand for Aerosmith’s music rose significantly at a time as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication among its fans. Recently, a streamer achieved an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult power-metal song made popular by Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics but an array of personalization features. This track is difficult even in the hardest setting, not to mention played at increased tempo and without missing a single one of the thousands of cues. They stated requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, fantasy thing. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you should use a real gun and enlist,” notes musician Herman Li.

The band previously completed a successful tour when their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember the record label informing us that our records were moving rapidly,” he says. “It exploded when we next toured, and we performed just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it has threatened to eclipsing all other the band has done. Recently, the track was used in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I felt otherwise, but now I accept it,” Li says. “If you only hear one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – each person has a unique musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Legacy from the Iconic Controller

The best promotion, be it for cars, apparel or video games, extends beyond mere transactions – it evokes a longing. Was the game able to tap into that? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a rock star on the stage. From day one, the creators believed humans have a natural urge to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to allow people to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out over a mere five-year period between 2005 and 2010, featuring derivative titles like DJ Hero, complete with a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. After that, the publisher’s interest on peripherals died down, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Games like Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have kept the scene active, with set to be a new product from the founders on the way. A new studio has entered production on their first rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are both involved as special advisers. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed such titles might become like Madden where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant fresh tracks it could remain evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
