The protective shield covering the Chernobyl nuclear reactor in Ukraine has lost its main safety function of containing radioactive material, as announced by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This loss of function comes after a drone strike earlier this year that caused significant damage in the protective shell.

Damage from Aerial Attack Compromises Containment System

An attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle in February severely damaged the multibillion-euro “New Safe Confinement” arch. This massive shield, constructed for €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was designed to contain radiation over the long term. A recent IAEA inspection last week found that the drone impact had degraded the integrity of the steel arch.
