Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside his partner, announced that he will personally create the controversial product within a personal collection showcasing causes the company has been barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators versus Parent Company
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing conflict among the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that originally established several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder stated that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues that the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented how "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
