Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
